Reflections on Hope, Miracles, and Transcendent Moments
Parashat Mikeitz • Genesis 41:1–44:17
“God has revealed to Pharaoh what He is about to do.”
— Genesis 41:28
Parashat Mikeitz brings us to a pivotal moment in Joseph’s journey—one in which insight, courage, and responsibility converge. After years of uncertainty and imprisonment, Joseph is summoned from the depths to stand before Pharaoh, interpreting dreams that will shape the fate of an entire nation.
Genesis 41:28 marks a moment of revelation. Joseph understands that what is being revealed is not only a forecast of abundance and famine, but a call to prepare wisely, act responsibly, and care for the future. Vision alone is not enough; it must be paired with action. Joseph’s ability to see clearly in a time of great uncertainty becomes a source of light for others.

Transcendent Moments
A Prayer for Parashat Mikeitz
May God’s luminous presence,
revealed in every breath,
every heartbeat,
every face and every footstep,
hallow our homes,
open our hearts,
and illuminate our path.
May each transcendent
moment of revelation
increase our awareness
of the inherent connection
between all living beings,
and may that awareness
enhance and deepen
our connection to God.
When Darkness Feels Overwhelming
This week, Jewish communities around the world are still reeling from the horrific antisemitic attack in Sydney, Australia. The violence, the loss, and the shockwaves of fear and grief have been felt far beyond one place or one community.
In the aftermath of the attack, I found myself turning—as I often do—to prayer. This prayer was written the day after the attack, as Jewish communities around the world grappled with shock, sorrow, fear, and resolve.

A Prayer After the Sydney Attack
Eternal Source of Light—Or HaOlam,
On Hanukkah, we are commanded to kindle light,
yet we stand shocked and shattered,
our souls shrieking in disbelief—
reeling from the antisemitic attack in Sydney, Australia,
that claimed fifteen innocent lives,
wounded more than forty attendees,
and sent shockwaves of fear and grief
through Jewish communities around the world.
Help us not give in to fear.
Allow us to light our hanukkiyot with purpose and pride,
and to shine the light of love into our broken world.
Hold close the bereaved and brokenhearted.
Heal the wounded and comfort their loved ones.
Strengthen the rescuers, healers, and community leaders
who carry the weight of this tragedy.
When hatred surges, help us kindle courage
and shine our soul’s light.
Remind us that Hanukkah celebrates the miracle
of our people’s triumph over oppression,
and that we are not alone.
Pushing Back the Darkness
Hanukkah reminds us that even the smallest flame can push back great darkness, and that hope is often found not in certainty, but in commitment, community and the belief that tomorrow has the possibility of being better than today. Light may not eradicate darkness—but it can illuminate a path forward. And sometimes, that is miracle enough.
When the world becomes a dark and frightening place, the call is not only to endure—but to let the light of our souls illuminate the darkness.

The Month of Tevet
This week also brings Rosh Chodesh Tevet, inviting us into a new month that unfolds in the heart of winter. Tevet arrives quietly, asking us to pay attention to the subtler forms of light—the kind that grows steadily even when days are short and nights feel long.
Tevet reminds us that illumination does not always arrive in a sudden flash. Sometimes it comes gradually, through patience, persistence, and trust. Through showing up. Through believing that our presence matters. Through choosing hope again and again.
A Blessing for the Month of Tevet
May the month of Tevet be a season of wisdom —
of seeking, questioning, and discerning.
May we honor the lessons of the past,
and find ways to turn insight into action.
May we be guided by insight
and strengthened by steady hope.
May the lights we kindle help illuminate a path forward
for us and those we love.
May the sparks of holiness hidden in each challenge
illuminate our paths with clarity, compassion, and peace.
And may Tevet remind us
that even in the deepest winter,
the promise of renewal is already present.

Closing Blessing
