Illuminated Dreams

December 12, 2025 by Joanne Fink

Reflections on Hanukkah and Being a Light in the World

Parashat Vayeishev • Genesis 37:1–40:23

This week’s Torah portion, Vayeishev, opens with a verse that has inspired generations of seekers and storytellers: “And Joseph dreamed a dream”. Genesis 37:5

Joseph’s dreams shape not only his own destiny but also the destiny of our entire people. They guide him through betrayal, loss, and imprisonment. His ability to interpret dreams ultimately puts him into a position where he can save lives and bring blessings to others.

When I illuminated this verse, I imagined Joseph as a visionary — someone who could see possibility even when others could not — someone who trusted the spark within. His dreams didn’t protect him from hardship, but they carried him through it.

Dreams are like that.
They invite us into possibility.
They illuminate our path and help us believe in who we might become.

And during seasons of challenge, a dream can be a small but steady light — a reminder that what exists now is not all that will ever be.

As Hanukkah approaches, the connection between dreams and light feels especially poignant.

Hanukkah and the Courage to Shine

Hanukkah invites us to believe in unexpected light — to trust that a single flame can pierce immense darkness. The miracle of the oil is, at its core, a miracle of courage: the willingness to light a lamp even when we fear it won’t last.

Joseph’s dreams were their own kind of Hanukkah light. They held promise when everything around him seemed dim.

In my artwork and teachings, I often return to the theme Be the Light. Light expands when we share it. It deepens when we nurture it. And it becomes transformative when we offer it to someone who is struggling. LIGHT is my acronym for Love, Inspire, Give, Heal, Transform. For it is when we reach out in LOVE, and INSPIRE by the example of GIVING from our hearts, that we can not only help HEAL the world– but we wind up TRANSFORMing ourselves in the process. I explored this process in the journaling page below.

This season, we are invited to kindle our own lights and to help others kindle theirs.
To ignite hope.
To illuminate possibility.
To bless the world with the radiance of who we are and what we carry.

Here’s my prayer for Parashat Vayeishev:

Blessing

May God bless you
with strength and courage
when you need it most.

May you have the opportunity
to be a blessing to others,
and may God watch over you
on your journey.

May you be surrounded
by those you love,
and may you bring laughter and joy
into their lives.

May the love you share
come back to you multi-fold,
and may your prayers be answered
and all your dreams fulfilled.

Guided Journaling Questions

As you reflect on Parashat Vayeishev and prepare to kindle the Hanukkah lights, I invite you to explore these questions in your journal:

  1. What dream is calling to you right now?
  2. Where have you experienced light in a moment of darkness?
  3. How might you be a source of light for someone else this week?
  4. What blessing do you long to offer — or receive — in this season of miracles?
  5. If you trusted your inner light completely, what dream would you dare to dream?

Closing Blessing

May the warm glow of the Hanukkah lights illuminate your path.
May your dreams inspire you to keep hope in your heart.
May the love you share ripple outward, blessing others in ways you may never fully know.
And may you always remember that your light matters —
and the world is brighter because you are in it.
