Reflections on Toldot, Kislev & Thanksgiving
Parashat Toldot • Genesis 25:19–28:9
“I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven…” — Genesis 26:4

Parashat Toldot weaves together themes of legacy, struggle, blessing, and becoming. As I illuminated Genesis 26:4, I was struck anew by the promise of Divine possibility embedded in this verse. In a story filled with tension and uncertainty, God reassures Isaac that blessing and continuity remain possible—even when the way forward is uncertain.

Prayer for Parashat Toldot
The Light of Consciousness
May the luminous
Light of Consciousness
that surrounds and fills us
suffuse our hearts
and sanctify our souls.
May we embrace
the radiance
and Be Still
long enough to become
present to what is.
May surrendering to
the Divine unfolding
of this moment
lead us into
expansive s p a c i o u s n e s s,
timeless transcendence,
and boundless blessings.

A Thanksgiving Reflection
Those of us in the United States will be celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday. It’s a time to gather with family and friends, share a festive meal, and pause to appreciate the blessings in our lives. Rooted in the practice of gratitude, the holiday invites us to reflect on the people who sustain us, the daily miracles we sometimes overlook, and the ways we can express generosity and kindness. Whether the table is full or the gathering is small, Thanksgiving offers a moment to slow down, open our hearts, and give thanks for the gifts of connection, nourishment, and love.
Share Gratitude with Someone You Love
Expressing appreciation is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to bring more light into the world. This Thanksgiving season, I invite you to share a blessing or word of thanks with someone who has made a difference in your life.

Prayers & Miracles
My daughter was diagnosed with stage 4, triple-negative breast cancer last month, and since then I’ve been praying for a miracle. Specifically I’m praying for someone to discover a new treatment that will be effective for her type of breast cancer.

Kislev: A Month of Light, Hope, and Trust
Kislev — the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar — is traditionally associated with miracles, trust, dreams, and divine protection. It arrives at the darkest time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, inviting us to kindle light, hold onto hope, and believe in what we cannot yet see.

Kislev is known as the month of miracles—a time when light breaks through darkness, hope outshines fear, and the unexpected becomes possible. Rooted in the story of Hanukkah, Kislev invites us to notice not only the dramatic miracles of our tradition but also the quiet, hidden blessings that sustain us each day. As we kindle light against the growing darkness, we are reminded that even the smallest flame can illuminate great distances, and that faith, courage, and perseverance can carry us farther than we ever imagined.
Blessing for the Month of Kislev
May the month of Kislev be a season of light—
of dreaming, kindling, and believing.
May we open our hearts to miracles
and have faith that even in the darkest times
the light will shine again.
May we keep hope in our hearts
and find ways to nurture courage, resilience, and joy.
May we kindle sparks of compassion and connection,
and may the light within us grow steadier and stronger each day,
allowing us to illuminate the path for others.
May gratitude, love, and kindness be the lights that guide us.
Ken yehi ratzon — may it be so.
