COMMUNITY PROJECTS: Scroll down to see photos of some of the community and Artist-in-Residence projects I’ve done. If your community would like to create a special installation, please email joanne@zenspirations.com to let me know your needs.
Tree of Life– This is a project that the Orlando community did for the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue in the aftermath of the October 2018 shooting.
Jewish Arts Weeks– Sponsored by the American Guild of Judaic Art, Jewish Arts Week is celebrated annually coinciding with the Torah portion about Bezalel. The photos below are from the Jewish Arts Week celebrations I organized for the Orlando community.
Camp Jenny– Camp Jenny is NFTY’s Southern Area and Southern Tropical Regions’ year-round mitzvah corps project, giving children from an impoverished Atlanta community the opportunity to receive tutoring and support throughout the year which then culminates in a 4-day long camp experience at URJ’s Camp Coleman over Memorial Day Weekend. I was the Artist in Residence at the 2006 URJ SE Regional Biennial, and wanted to create something collaborative with and for the Camp Jenny students. I worked with the Camp Jenny counselors who helped the kids each paint a tile. I designed a mural for their school, and during the Biennial invited participants to help I paint it. I used the tiles painted by the kids to create a frame to surround the mural, which is hung in the lobby of the Walter Francis White Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia.
Camp Widow–In addition to giving workshops at Camp Widow Tampa, I hand-letter the names of the participants’ deceased spouses. There is a moving candlelight ceremony at the end of camp to commemorate everyone’s loss.
Dream Keepers– I was asked to design the lettering for this sculptural installation in a County park in Duluth, Georgia.
