Before I put pen to paper to create a new design for Shabbat each week, I read the weekly ‘parsha’ (Torah portion), looking for a phrase or passage that resonates. This week I needed to look no further than than the opening of Deuteronomy: These are the words אֵ֣לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֗ים.
As a lettering artist and writer, words are my craft and my passion! They have the power to comfort, educate, and empower. The right words, spoken at the right time, can help heal hearts and connect communities.
Positivity is an important part of my spiritual practice– and I make an intentional effort to choose words that are uplifting, inspiring and encouraging. While we cannot control what happens in the world, we can control our attitude– and the words we use. Every single word matters! This concept is so important to me that I created two different pieces of art this week. They are both part of my Enso series; one is hand done, the other hand painted and composed in PhotoShop. Given all the interest I’ve had in my Enso art, I am planning to teach a class on it sometime soon. If you are interested in learning more about this spiritual and creative practice, leave a comment and I’ll let you know when I schedule the class.
My prayer for this Shabbat is that we each choose our words with care, so that all we say and do will be a reflection of our best selves. As always, you are welcome to share.
